Hemorrhoids:

Often described as "varicose veins of the anus and rectum", hemorrhoids are enlarged, bulging blood vessels in and about the anus and lower rectum.

Types:

There are two types of hemorrhoids: external and internal, which refer to their location.

External (outside) hemorrhoids develop near the anus and are covered by very sensitive skin. These are usually painless. However, if a blood clot (thrombosis) develops in an external hemorrhoid, it becomes a painful, hard lump. The external hemorrhoid may bleed if it ruptures.

Internal (inside) hemorrhoids develop within the anus beneath the lining. Painless bleeding and protrusion during bowel movements are the most common symptom. However, an internal hemorrhoid can cause severe pain if it is completely "prolapsed" - protrudes from the anal opening and cannot be pushed back inside.

Grades of Internal Haemorrhoids:

Grade 1 are small swellings on the inside lining of the back passage. They cannot be seen or felt from outside the anus. Grade 1 haemorrhoids are common. In some people they enlarge further to grade 2 or more.

Grade 2 are larger. They may be partly pushed out (prolapse) from the anus when you go to the toilet, but quickly 'spring back' inside again.

Grade 3 hang out (prolapse) from the anus. You may feel one or more as small, soft lumps that hang from the anus. However, you can push them back inside the anus with a finger.

Grade 4 permanently hang down from within the anus, and you cannot push them back inside. They sometimes become quite large.

Causes of hemorrhoids:

An exact cause is unknown; however, the upright posture of humans alone forces a great deal of pressure on the rectal veins, which sometimes causes them to bulge. Other contributing factors include:

• Aging

• Chronic constipation or diarrhea.

• Pregnancy

• Heredity

• Straining during bowel movements

• Faulty bowel function due to overuse of laxatives or enemas

• Spending long periods of time (e.g., reading) on the toilet

• Consumption of too many spicy and pungent foods.

Due to the above reasons the tissues supporting the vessels stretch. As a result, the vessels dilate; their walls become thin and start to bleed. If the stretching and pressure continues, the weakened vessels begin to protrude.

What are the symptoms?

If you notice any of the following, you could have hemorrhoids:

• Bleeding during bowel movements

• Protrusion during bowel movements

• Itching in the anal area

• Pain

• Sensitive lump(s)

How are hemorrhoids treated?

Mild symptoms can be relieved frequently by increasing the amount of fiber (e.g., fruits, vegetables, breads and cereals) and fluids in the diet. Eliminating excessive straining reduces the pressure on hemorrhoids and helps prevent them from protruding. A sitz bath - sitting in plain warm water after adding a few drops of dettol or savlon for about 10 minutes - can also provide some relief .

With these measures, the pain and swelling of most symptomatic hemorrhoids will decrease in two to seven days, and the firm lump should recede within four to six weeks.

Natural cure for Haemorrhoids:

Here are few natural remedies that are used for hemorrhoids.

Fibers:

Fiber can soften stool and increase its bulk, which helps to reduce straining. Seven randomized trials with a total of 378 participants have found fiber improved symptoms including itching, discomfort, and pain. Foods high in fiber are whole grains and vegetables. Psyllium, a powdered fiber supplement, is another option, one teaspoon of the powder in water followed by another glass of water. Another option is ground flaxseeds. Whatever the source of fiber, it's important to drink sufficient water or constipation may worsen.

Butcher's Broom:

The plant butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus), which is also known as knee holly, box holly, and sweet broom, it is often used when there is underlying poor circulation in the veins. Butcher's broom is usually recommended in capsule or tea form. The tea has a slightly bitter taste, so a bit of honey can be used to sweeten it. The tea can be made by steeping one teaspoon of the herb in a cup of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Butchers broom has also been shown to be effective when applied topically as an ointment or compress.

Butcher's broom should not be used by people with high blood pressure, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), by pregnant or nursing women, or by people taking alpha blocker or MAO inhibitor drugs unless otherwise recommended by their doctor.

Triphala:

An Ayurvedic compound of three fruits. It is well-known as a bowel tonic that gently relieves constipation without being a harsh stimulant.

Quick recipes:
